Amanda — Wigs By Amanda

Some businesses are built from opportunity.
Others are built from absence.
For Amanda, it started with noticing what wasn’t there.
A Jamaican hairstylist and beauty entrepreneur on Cape Cod, Amanda created Wigs By Amanda after experiencing the lack of culturally competent hair care when she moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 2018. What began as doing her own wigs — transforming her hair into wearable art — quickly turned into something more. People began asking her to install theirs. Then to braid. Then to teach them how to care for their hair.

Everything she does today is self-taught — shaped by Caribbean culture, resilience, and creativity.
Her work now includes protective styling, natural hair care, locs, braids for men and kids, sew-ins, and custom wigs — all centered around healthy hair and confidence. But beyond styling, she creates something deeper: a space where clients feel seen, comfortable, and valued.

As a mother, content creator, and business owner, Amanda balances multiple roles daily — answering bookings, working with clients, creating content, and building a future for her family. Progress, even slow progress, keeps her moving.

Being a Black creative on Cape Cod comes with visibility and responsibility.
For Amanda, representation matters.
Through her work she opens doors, changes narratives, and reminds other Black creatives that there is room for them here too.

Her advice:
Start scared — but start anyway.
You don’t need everything figured out.
Grow as you go.
Because creativity isn’t just talent.
It’s courage.
